A movie date. A fun outing with friends at the Multiplex. These are some common things we have heard of. But have you ever been to the movies alone? A date with the self?
Well, luckily, I had the chance to experience one. By accident though, but it was worth it. One day, I was to meet a friend at a nearby mall but she cancelled on me at the last moment. I was infuriated. For once, I got so angry, I accidentally kicked a can lying on the floor and it hit a guy standing at the entrance of the mall. The cold look he gave me was enough to ruin my day. However, I apologized.
I didn’t want to go home as I was sick of my boring job-to-home and home-to-job routine. Being a movie freak, I thought of watching a movie, alone. I had never been to the movies alone before and it seem a little bizarre. But I decided to do it anyway.
I bought the tickets from the counter. To my surprise, only the back seats were filled with couples. All the seats in the front and middle rows were all empty since it was a working day and a morning show. I sat in the middle row and kinda enjoyed the vacant theater. I was totally able to concentrate on the movie, which was really good (Tamasha). I loved the movie since I was able to connect to the story. After that I did a little shopping, bought some accessories and clothes for myself, and had my favorite noodles with a chilled cold drink at a Chinese outlet in the mall. I can’t even begin to express the joy of not having to share my food with anyone and enjoy all of it alone. Lol!
The one thing I learnt from this ‘date with myself’ was that once in a while, you need to just get away from all the crowd and people, and be on your own for a little while. When you spend such kind of a quality time with yourself, you are able to connect with yourself like never before. And trust me, that is one thing which is very important if you want to feel actual contentment. Your inner self also needs some pampering now and then. Buy yourself some stuff alone, go to the movies alone, eat by yourself in the cafe, walk like you don’t care. Take time to reconnect with the person within you. Feel like you’re not alone, but with the most gorgeous person in the world, i.e. YOU!Ā
Never lose that smile! š
Super cool.
Amazing one.
I can actually connect with this.
I have to shopping alone but never tried a movie..
It is on my list now š

I stopped going to theater, after one incident such that happened. It’s better to call some neighbors and watch it at the comfort of our home. It’s more fun. If you are like No I wanna go, gave that money to some poor, you will feel even more of the real joy.

That is very kind. I don’t go to the movies a lot. But this was just an experience. To make myself feel good, as I was pissed at my friend.
But yes, totally agree to your noble point. š Thanks!

I have been going to the movies alone for the past 6+ years and I would continue to do so. I have some weird people around me.
1. Just like your friend cancelled out on you, my friends do the same. I have stopped asking over time.
2. People want to see the review and then watch. I am more of a if I want to watch I will watch it, without reading the reviews.
3. People don’t like English movies unless it is a huge title. I watch movie every week.
If you find some weird guy alone in the theater, that would most definitely be me. So, keep an eye out, just in case.

I’ve been to the movies maybe 10 times and I agree with you- it’s very nice and maybe even better than going with someone else (who will distract you, eat your food, etc. Haha). In general I prefer to watch movies alone, even at home, it’s a different experience.

I love to go to the movies alone… but thatĀ“s cause maybe I consider it a “personal” experience and like to watch classical old movies too… ha!: Plus even if I date guys I donĀ“t have boyfriend, so it is not the kind of outing for random picks ups if you know what I mean… Lovely post! š š

I tried the movie alone thing once. It was already a three-hour movie and the film kept hitting snags. They kept fixing it as we waited (one of us had noone to talk to to fill the time). In the end, I was there at least four hours.

I actually love watching a movie alone. Whenever stated the same, people around me wonder how could I do watch a movie alone. But it’s cool. Like even if a gang of people go to a movie, it really doesn’t matter because all you will do after sitting in the cozy chair in the theatre is watching a movie. So it doesn’t make any difference.

What made me hesitant for so long to go to a movie on my own was societal pressure. What if I run into someone? How will I explain my reasoning behind being alone? Could I handle their pity gaze and their assumptions about my loneliness? For the longest time, I had been omitting some gems on theaters because “no one would want to go with me.” One day, around award season, I decided to say screw it, and I went, not for one, but for two movies on my own. I watched Carol and Room, both exquisite movies, and while my hesitation was there at the beginning, it quickly dissolved. There’s a certain freeing quality about exhorting your independence in your everyday activities. I enjoyed your voice, nice article!

Wow! I can understand your doubtfulness. I was too under too much doubt since I didn’t plan for it. I kinda did it to pass the time. But as you said, the doubts quickly dissolved and it was one of the best experiences. Independence does induce a weird confidence. And if you feel it right, it is definitely worth it.
Thanks a lot, dear friend for your read and feedback.
